Rev. Katie Day, Senior Pastor
Katie Day is a native of Jacksonville, Florida, and has always lived in the Southeast with the exception of 7 years in California’s Central Coast. She’s been in ministry since 1998, when she accidentally accepted a part-time youth director position at a tiny church filled with punk rock teenagers, and loved every minute spent with them while also studying Theatre Arts at Furman University. Katie pursued professional acting for a few years after graduation, but wound up enjoying the time she spent in between jobs volunteering as a small group leader in her parents’ church in Florida more than she enjoyed auditioning and performing, and a call to ministry was discerned.
Katie graduated from Columbia Theological Seminary with the Master of Divinity in 2006, but not before meeting and falling in love with Kevin Day. Kevin is also a Presbyterian pastor, ordained to non-parish ministry of teaching middle and high school, and currently serving as Impact Design Lab Coordinator at the Mount Vernon School. Their son, Elijah, who was adopted into their family, brings them creativity and joy and energy on the daily, while they learn to be better and more joyful and faithful parents and people every step of the way.
In Katie’s spare time (which seems rarer these days of parenting an elementary schooler), she enjoys the gift of attending and performing in local community and professional theatres, and while the future likely finds her in the audience more often than on the stage, supporting the arts and nurturing a love of theatre, music, and dance in Elijah is a priority for their family. As a family, the Days love the outdoors, and enjoy exploring nearby parks, the North Georgia Mountains, and all that Atlanta has to offer. To unwind, Katie enjoys losing herself in a good book or binge-worthy TV show while enjoying a glass of wine, a Diet Coke, or a peppermint tea, always paired with cheese and chocolate.
The Days live with two cats, Magnificat and Cataphatic (also known as Maggie Teapots and Fatty Pancakes), who keep them on their toes by spreading their toys throughout the house each night. An outdoor cat, affectionately named Mama, has recently adopted them, and they love caring for her on their back deck.
The warm, welcoming, and inclusive community at Pleasant Hill inspires Katie daily as she preaches, leads the staff, and guides the congregation to connect faith with everyday life and serve our neighbors with extravagant hospitality. Moving into this role in March of 2020 brought many challenges, and Katie is incredibly grateful for the privilege of serving with such a flexible, creative, open, and warm-hearted congregation. Katie particularly enjoys leading the weekday morning Women’s Bible Study, building connections in faith and strengthening friendships through study and laughter. Her favorite Bible stories are all from the Old Testament: stories of faithful people experiencing God in many ways, struggling and rejoicing, turning away from and turning back toward the grace, love, and presence God promises.
